Category: Organizational Leadership
Speech Length: 45 minutes
The human brain, like the organizational leader, sits atop the various functions of the body and, in theory, keeps the parts working in harmony through the force of its will. The reality, however, is more complex. Bodily organs function in some sense independent of the brain. A transplanted heart, for instance, beats at the same rhythm as its original owner. The brain's job therefore is to employ independent organs in a way that keeps the body healthy.
The people in an organization are similar. Yes, they are "controlled" from the top. But more accurately, they are independent and complex entities that must be understood and managed before they can be harnessed into a harmonious balance. This balance can be achieved by understanding what motivates individuals in an organization.
This speech outlines five tensions in an organization and how different people can complement each other and produce optimal results.
