This project came into mere existence through the desire to self-reflect on value systems that promote bias. In the journey of authoring this book, my most profound inspiration emerged from a place of subjective revelation. It began in the heart of my own environment, where I witnessed the profound effects of bias rooted in religious beliefs, as demonstrated by the people I respected most. Their perspectives, deeply colored by faith, often clashed with the values of inclusivity and understanding that I later learned to hold dear. This desire to grow beyond my socialized childhood faith (and teachings) and expose myself to broader perspectives sowed the seeds of my determination to address and combat bias in its many forms. How do we address and combat bias, especially when it is so deeply ingrained in our most fundamental relationships and beliefs? In seeking answers, I embarked on a journey that led me to research, have conversations with diverse individuals, and evaluate my biases through personal introspection. This book is the culmination of that journey. It is an exploration of the various forms of bias—be it religious, racial, gender-based, or cultural—and the impact it has on individuals and societies. More importantly, it is a call to action, a guide to understanding bias in ourselves and others, and a roadmap to fostering a more inclusive and understanding world. Through this book, I hope to honor the complexity of the human experience, acknowledging that bias is a part of our shared humanity, yet something we can strive to overcome. It is a tribute to those like my family, who, in their own way, teach us the importance of looking beyond our limited perspectives. It is a message of hope—that through awareness, compassion, and persistence, we can create a world where diversity is celebrated and bias is a relic of the past.
