About Sara Wachter-Boettcher

The event was INCREDIBLE! And Sara was absolutely fantastic - she was polished, thoughtful, and authentic. Honestly the whole thing, it was a really refreshing viewpoint, and made me motivated to make change happen at Capital One. This was genuinely extremely helpful and motivating. I've been feeling a lot of the binaries that Sara talked about and have definitely had that lead to inaction and paralysis and made me worry that I am not doing my job well. It was such a relief to hear that these binaries are things that many others are feeling and I loved that she offered so many good ways to shift our perspective. Honestly it was so motivating! The content was candid and not judgmental. Allowing everyone to look at their own biases and wonder what we can all do differently. This was an amazing combination of critical content and flawless delivery. Thank you for bringing this to us.

Technically Wrong: Sexist Apps, Biased Algorithms, and Other Threats of Toxic Tech - Book by Sara Wachter-Boettcher

Technically Wrong: Sexist Apps, Biased Algorithms, and Other Threats of Toxic Tech” (2017)

Buying groceries, tracking our health, finding a date: whatever we want to do, odds are that we can now do it online. But few of us ask why all these digital products are designed the way they are. It’s time we change that. Many of the services we rely on are full of oversights, biases, and downright ethical nightmares: Chatbots that harass women. Signup forms that fail anyone who’s not straight. Social media sites that send peppy messages about dead relatives. Algorithms that put more black people behind bars. Sara Wachter-Boettcher takes an unflinching look at the values, processes, and assumptions that lead to these and other problems. Technically Wrong demystifies the tech industry, leaving those of us on the other side of the screen better prepared to make informed choices about the services we use―and demand more from the companies behind them.
